The Original Tamagotchi
The original Tamagotchi toy was released in 1996 in Japan and 1997 in America and Europe. There are a totla of 11 characters - 7 adults, 2 teens, one toddler and one baby. One of the adults is a "secret" character. There are two "generations" and they have different characters, and some other minor differences.
Tamagotchi Angel or Angelgotchi
The Angelgotchi was released in 1997 with four different designs.
The option to disipline in case of misbehavior was replaced by the option to praise for doing good in the Angelgotchi. The discipline meter was replaced by a good deeds meter.
The Angelgotchi had a sound sensor. Sometimes, when the Angelgotchi was eating sweets, a bat would try to take the sweet away. The caretaker then had to make a noise to scare it away. If the bat succeeded, the Angelgotchi's good deed level would decrease.
Tamagotchi Plus
The Tamagotchi Plus was released in Japan in 2004. It is mostly the same as the Tamagotchi Connexion/Connection Version 1, the only difference being the language. It includes characters from the original Tamagotchi as well as several characters new to the Tamagotchi series. It implements an infrared port to connect to other Tamagotchi to "make friends," play games and exchange presents with other Tamagotchi's (Tamagotchi Plus, Connexion, and Connection), including later models, and also breed and create a new generation of Tamagotchi.
Tamagotchi Connexion
The Tamagotchi Connexion is the English-language version of the Tamagotchi Plus that was released in Oceania, Asia, and Europe. It is mainly the same as the later U.S.-released Tamagotchi Connection, with slight changes in the wording of menu screens.
Tamagotchi Connection
The Tamagotchi Connection is the English-language version of the Tamagotchi Plus that was released in North America. It is also informally called "V1" or "Version 1". The language is slightly different from Tamagotchi Connexion to conform to U.S. English. It lets players connect via infrared to other players systems and become friends, get married, and have babies. It also introduced the "pause" option.
Tamagotchi Connection Version 2
(Also called Version 2, Vr. 2, Ver. 2, or V2) The Tamagotchi Connection Version 2 was released in 2005 in the U.S. The Tamagotchi Connection Version 2 features newer characters and ones taken from older tamagotchis like Osutchi and Mesutchi and the original Tamagotchi.
"Gotchi Points," were introduced which are earned by playing the games and are used to buy items from a shop. The maximum GP possible is 9999. Caretakers can connect with other users; the user is able to choose whether to play a game or give a present. The option to connect to either Version 1 or Version 2 Tamagotchi was introduced. Five "codes" are available on the V2 that unlock special items.
Tamagotchi Connection Version 3
(Also known as Version 3, V3, Ver. 3, VR3, or Tama V3)
The Version 3 was released in 2006. Like the Version 2, it borrows some features from the latest version of the Japanese toy, but greatly simplifies them. It came in a large number of different colour schemes and patterns. The Version 3 unit has an antenna like bump which distinguishes it from the versions 1 and 2. There are over 20 new characters, bringing the total number of Tamagotchi Connection characters to 52. It is able to connect with Version 1 and 2, as well as other V3 Tamagotchis.
The Version 3 can also be used with Tamatown.com which generates codes which the user can input into the tamagotchi and receive souvenirs and gifts, which are items that the user can collect. Passwords also give shop items and food in exchange for Gotchi Points. The Tamagotchi can eat the food that the user buys in TamaTown. Other than the code from the Nintendo DS Game, the passwords unlocked on the pet or on TamaTown.com will not work on other Tamagotchis due to the username system.
There are six new games, as well as new games that the Tamagotchi play with each other when connecting. The winner gets points depending on the stage of the connecting Tamagotchis.
Some souvenirs "turn off" after each previous generation, which is not a glitch but a feature. Souvenirs 2 (Town Hall Key), 3 (Key #2), 7 (Clean up game medal), and Souvenirs 18 to 21 (Arcade items you can win for free) turn off when the new generation appears. These are Free items you can turn back on if you saved your passwords that turned them on in the first place. Souvenirs you pay for (The Trip souvenirs) or donate points for (Ring, Cape and Crown from the Tamagotchi King) do not turn off.
Seven codes are available on the Version 3 that unlock special items, similar to the five codes for the Version 2.
Tamagotchi Connection Version 4
(Also known as Version 4, V4, Ver. 4, VR4, or Tama V4) - the current tamagotchi toy.
Released in New Zealand and Spain in late 2006 and released in the US and UK early in 2007.

Did you know...
On August 03, 2005 South Australian MP Nick Xenophon tried to ban the Tamagotchi Connection Version 2 due to the Slot Game featured on it, fearing that it will make kids wish to gamble in the future. This backfired, as many Australians went out and bought Tamagotchis.

V3 - Visiting the King Code
In Tamatown there is a king. To visit him you must have a code from your Tamagotchi v3 toy. To get the code you must donate a minimum of 5000 points and a code will appear, but remember to write it down because it doesn't come up again.

The 10 digit codes that you get in Tamatown cannot be shared as they are unique to your user name and won't work for other users. We have received a lot of 10 digit codes from Tama-fans, but we have not posted them as they are not useful to everyone!
