Model Railway Suppliers

There are a wide range of manufacturers of model railways and accessories and a quick search of the Internet using your favourite search engine will quickly throw up several to chose from. You may also be lucky enough to have a model shop nearby that stocks a good range of railway related models. Your local yellow pages should have them listed.

There is a multitude of scales/gauges available; many produced by purists to improve the accuracy of previous scales/gauges. By far the most popular and most widely available are 00, HO and N. Many of the others require specialist support and are the province of scratch building modellers.

Historically there are broadly two main groups:
  • "Standard gauge", based on a 4ft 8½in prototype.

  • "Narrow gauge", being any railway with a track gauge less than “standard gauge”.

This page gives a good list of model railway gauges.

Campaigners build model railway in Beverley Minster

Campaigners hoping to reopen a Yorkshire railway line have put a model of the route on display in Beverley Minster.

The Minsters' Rail Campaign aims to reopen the Beverley to York railway line that was closed in 1965 following the Beeching Report.

The 12m-long (40ft) model recreates part of the line near Market Weighton, East Yorkshire in its 1950s heyday.
